Minutes of Baldwin Hills ARC Meeting 9/3/97 The ninth 1997 meeting of the Baldwin Hills Amateur Radio Club was called to order by the President, Greg, KD6AIS, at 7:40 PM on September 3, 1997. Also in attendance were Robert, KF6CHA, the Vice-President, who really was present this time; Hugh, NV6H, the Secretary; Ed, WA6MDJ, Chairman of the Board of Directors; and David, N6HGJ, our diligent Membership Chairman/ Treasurer. I. Old Business The Secretary read the minutes. They were accepted, as corrected. The Secretary, acting in his capacity as ARRL liaison, noted that the League was gearing up to oppose the cellular lobby's bills in Congress, which would effectively put an end to the scanner/SWL hobby, and probably also to out-of-band ham radios. This one is serious, folks. The Vice-President had no report. N6HGJ, the Treasurer, reported that the Club's account balance was the same as last month, $536.45, but soon to be debited the $100 that was set aside for the SW Division Convention. Another undetermined amount will be spent on binders, leaving the rest for the Christmas party. WA6MDJ, the Chairman/Trustee, noted that the Mt. Harvard 440 was still awaiting tower work, and that the repeater sites would need another cleanup in October, before the dreaded El Nino. Six meters is back up, on 52.96, PL of 82.5, and it's an open machine. The recruiting flyers that were agreed on are now in the Candy Stores. II. New Business Ed, KD6LT, reported on the bi-monthly meeting of LAACARC, the L.A. Area Council of Amateur Radio Clubs, as held just before. Along with the aforementioned telecom bills in Congress, they also discussed the ARRL VEC's crackdown on medical exemptions from the code test, which are being abused. He also mentioned that the 1998 SW Division Convention will be in San Diego, back at the good old Town & Country, and the 1999 will be at the Queen Mary (yay!). Further, Ed noted that he had discussed BARC's declining membership at this meeting. Ideas from other clubs included new ham classes/Elmering, speakers at meetings, DVR tracks, and such. At this point, the floor was opened for discussion on the recruiting matter. It was noted that the rules on VEs do allow the Club to give tests and teach classes, as long as different people do it. There was also a sense that maybe new hams could be reached through making arrangements with the Candy Stores when they buy that first radio. Rick, N6KIB, reported that the Newsletter still needs copy, which can be e-mailed to him. Ed, WA6MDJ, added that members' e-mail addresses really ought to be in the Newsletter to facilitate such business. David, N6HGJ, will keep track of them. The President announced his as gpowell@pacbell.net. You can always shout up your Secretary at rfwatts@primenet.com. The President then thanked Samir for his usual great refreshments, and at 8:40 PM the meeting was adjourned until 7:30 PM on the first of October. Submitted for approval this 1st day of October, 1997 by Hugh Stegman NV6H, Secretary 2
